Startup Lesson: from P90x

So our team started doing P90X this week. There’s 4 of us doing it, first thing in the morning, in a very small tight living room. And shit hit the fan this morning — 4 days in.

We had a circuit training course set up with 4 stations — 3 exercises and 1 rest spot. One person decided to go rouge and do the circuit in his own order which was reverse of everyone else. Needless to say, totally chaos ensued.

Eventually, we figured it out about half way through, but it wasn’t pretty.

It’s the same way in a startup, especially one that is trying to do more faster. When everyone is running in a different direction, you don’t get anywhere. More realistically, you probably go backwards. You could also have everyone except one person (like this morning) going in the same direction and it still messes up your flow. Big time.

Unfortunately, it’s not always as easy to spot this in a startup as it is in a closed circuit P90X circuit in mile high altitude. Communication is key to ensuring that everyone is on the same page and moving in the same direction.
