Let Your Phone Die

An unusual thing happened to me last night at the New York Tech Meetup. I completely drained my iPhone battery and was without a phone — and by phone I obviously mean the internet. I am normally pretty good about keeping my phone charged, but it happens.

And then a funny thing happened.. I found myself fully engaged in the present moment.

I wasn’t constantly over-checking my email. I didn’t have an excuse to run into the corner of the after party and be anti-social. I couldn’t take out my phone when conversation got boring. I actually had to ask a stranger on the street where the nearest subway was. And I didn’t put headphones on and block out the world on the subway and bus last night. I actually read a book on the bus. Crazy.

Every once and a while, we should all just let our phones die and pretend like it’s 1995.
