"I’m on the Right Track"
(Note: This post did not come easy for me. I used to be a big hater of all things Lady Gaga and I know I’m not alone in this position. All I ask is you watch/listen to the video with an open mind)
It’s all about keeping an open mind.
A while back, I woke up in the middle of the night to this amazing female voice on the TV that I’ve never heard before but yet still sounded familiar. That voice was Lady Gaga. It was a preview for her HBO special linked above. I was impressed. Even if you don’t like her, listen to it. Trust me.
Behind all of her ridiculousness (like this), there is a very talented musician. Sadly, it took the incredible genius of HBO to show me the light.
HBO has taken the Steve Jobs approach: “A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show them.” I had no idea I was going to be so interested in the World War II battles of The Pacific until they created a masterful mini series.
Now I wouldn’t call myself a Lady Gaga fan because her music is still way too poppy, girly, and all that. Watch / Listen to the official version of Born This Way and Edge of Glory. Maybe it’s just me, but the official versions are almost unbearable compared to the HBO and Howard Stern versions. Then again, I’m not her target market and she is worshiped by her fans. So keep rocking out in your own way.
But I’ll tell you what, when Lady Gaga puts out a unplugged album with her on the piano, I’m listening.
You have to keep an open mind.
This week there was a release by a tech giant that totally squashed a major component of my startup. That was rock bottom when we discovered that. Devastated. Completely devastated.
Then we took a scene out of Collateral — “We’re into Plan B. Still breathing? Now we gotta make the best of it, improve, adapt to the environment, Darwin, shit happens, I Ching, whatever man, we gotta roll with it.”
Keep an open mind or you are going to miss some awesome opportunities. Oh, and don’t worry. We’re already on to Plan B, and we are better now than ever.
