Pitch: The last virtual currency you'll ever need to know. Apple Coins are a fully integrated digital currency backed by the full faith and credit of Apple. It is seamlessly integrated with all of your Apple products making it the most simple and efficient method of payment in the history of the universe. Apple Coin. You know it's coming.
Background: A few years ago, I tweeted out some nonsense about the credit rating of the United States being the same as Apple and how that didn't really seem right. That's even more relevant today than ever before. Apple currently has a cash stockpile of $238 billion. The US has a President who wants to pick a fight with everyone. It's really not that much of a stretch to say that a digital currency backed by Apple isn't a safer place than one that's backed by the US taxpayers.
I don't know if this is a true startup idea or not. I know that it should exist, and if it did, I would immediately switch all forms of payments to their platform. Perhaps only Apple can create a digital currency based on the value of Apple, but perhaps not. I'm sure there's some crazy derivatives and financial products that could be used to based the value of a currency on a stock price.
Anyways. It doesn't matter. I want this. Whether Apple does it themselves, or some kid does it in a garage, it needs to exist. Sure bitcoin or some other digital currency could fill this void, but there's so much potential for a fully integrated digital currency backed by the big tech companies. Google could pull it off. Amazon could pull it off. Maybe all of them will.
With a digital currency so closely tied to a large tech company, particularly one that we rely on for our phones and computers, it will only be a matter of time before you have the adoption and critical mass you need for this to really take off. Come on Apple. Show us that you still remember how to innovate!
