There was a time not too long ago when math was a great strength of mine. I used to be able to perform ridiculous calculations in my head, could figure out almost any math problem and equation, took 4 semesters of calculus in college. But like all things, without practice our skills become weak and fade away.

Complex-Math-Equation-Calculation

In a world of calculators and computers, I accept the fact that I can no longer do big square roots, long division, and complex equations in my head. But my favorite equation of all time doesn’t involve any numbers.

E + R = O

Simple put, Event + Response = Outcome.

"The basic idea is that every outcome you experience in life (whether it is success or failure) is the result of how you have responded to an earlier event or events in your life" Jack Canfield

It is all based on the premise that your response to a particular event determines your outcome, not the event itself. If it is a cold and rainy day, you may immediately say, “this is going to be one of those crappy days — I can feel it already.” That statement is your response to the rain.

One thing is for certain. If you have already decided that you are going to have a bad day because of the rain, well then you are going to find a way to have a bad day and blame it on the rain.

When something shitty happens to you, remember that you have the ability to change the outcome by changing your response. If that shitty event makes you more experienced and a better person, you outcome is totally different than if you start feeling depressed and sorry for yourself.

"You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself." Jim Rohn
